AI-Powered Tax Automation for UK Businesses
Taxara is an intelligent tax automation platform designed to help freelancers, tradespeople, and small businesses in the UK manage finances, stay compliant, and simplify taxes. Built with AI at its core, it automates bookkeeping, invoice creation, receipt scanning, VAT returns, and financial reporting — so business owners can spend 10x less time on finances.
Across the UK, millions of freelancers and tradespeople — taxi drivers, barbers, plumbers, electricians, delivery riders — face the same crushing burden: staying on the right side of HMRC while trying to run a business. Most have no formal accounting training, yet they are expected to track every receipt, categorise expenses correctly, calculate VAT obligations, and file accurate self-assessment returns on time or face penalties. The reality is grim. Receipts get lost in glove compartments and kitchen drawers. Income from multiple jobs goes unrecorded. VAT thresholds are misunderstood, leading to unexpected bills. And hiring an accountant — at £800 to £2,000 per year — is a luxury many sole traders simply cannot afford. Existing accounting software like Xero and QuickBooks was built for people who understand double-entry bookkeeping, not for a plumber who just wants to know how much tax they owe. The client needed a mobile-first solution that required absolutely zero accounting knowledge — something as simple as taking a photo of a receipt and having everything else handled automatically.
We built Taxara as an AI-powered mobile app for iOS and Android, alongside a companion web platform, designed from the ground up for people who have never opened a spreadsheet in their lives. Every design decision prioritised simplicity: no accounting jargon, no multi-step workflows, no configuration screens. The app does the thinking so the user does not have to. The AI receipt scanning engine is the centrepiece. Users snap a photo of any receipt — crumpled, faded, handwritten, or digital — and the AI extracts the merchant name, date, amount, VAT breakdown, and payment method, then automatically categorises the expense into the correct HMRC-compliant category. The system learns from corrections, improving its accuracy for each user's specific spending patterns over time. Invoice generation is equally effortless. Users enter a client name and amount, and the AI generates a professional, HMRC-compliant invoice with sequential numbering, correct VAT calculations, and payment terms — then tracks whether it has been paid. Automated reminders chase overdue invoices without the user lifting a finger. For VAT, Taxara continuously monitors income against the VAT registration threshold, alerts users when they are approaching it, and automatically prepares quarterly VAT returns from the categorised transaction data. The system integrates directly with HMRC's Making Tax Digital API, allowing users to submit returns without leaving the app. An AI chat assistant answers financial questions in plain English — "How much tax will I owe this year?" or "Can I claim my phone bill as an expense?" — providing personalised guidance based on the user's actual financial data. We integrated with major UK banking APIs through Open Banking to automatically import transactions, eliminating manual data entry entirely.
